ABOUT

Warwick Indain Classical Dance Society is unlike any other dancing society at Warwick. Our close knit group consists of dancers ranging in all sorts of abilities, from those who have never even done dancing, to those that are near experts.
The main Indian classical dances we do are
Bharatanatyam and Kathak

Bharatanatyam is a an invigorous dance style originating from the state of Tamil Nadu in the south of India. It's roots are closely tied with Hinduism, whereby the dance is a representation of Lord Shiva in His form as Nataraja. Kathak on the other hand, is another ancient dance form predominate over the north of India. Even the name Kathak (derived from the Sanskrit 'katha') means to tell a story. And so in essence, Kathak dancers are storytellers.

At ICD, our aim is to introduce and help society members partake in both Bharatanatyam and Kathak, and even sometimes, a fusion of the two with other dance styles. Our classes are taught by society members already skilled in one or both of the dance forms, who then assist in designing choreography for festivals around and about the Warwick Campus.
